Lev Semyonovich Vygotsky was born on November 17 1896 in Orsha, in the Russian Empire. He was born into a Jewish family of 8. He attended a gymnasium at Gomel. After that he began to study law, philosophy and history at the Moscow University in 1912. He showed a big interest in linguistics, language, literature, poetry and philosophy (Ivic, 1994). Lev received his degree in law and graduated from Moscow University in 1917. He went to study literature and linguistics and later received his Ph.D. for a book he wrote Psychology of Art in 1925 (Vasta,R., Haith,M.M., Miller,S.A., 1995). He began work on psychology after the Russian revolution in 1924 at The Institute of Psychology in Moscow and began collaborating with Alexei Leontiev and Alexander Luna (Gallagher, C., 1999).In 1924 Vygotsky married a woman named Roza Smekhova with who he later had 2 daughters with.
In in mid-1920s he continued his work at the Institute of Psychology as well as educational, research and clinical institutions in cities such as Moscow, Leningrad and Kharkov. Most of his work was in the field of Cognitive, Developmental and Child Psychology as well as education. Lev was a dedicated author and within the span of roughly 10 years published 6 books. Some of his books included: The Psychology of Art, Language or Thinking and Speech, Psychology and Pedagogy and Mind in Society: Development of Higher Psychological Processes.
Lev Vygotsky died of tuberculosis, in 1934 in Moscow, at the age of 37.
